'We are hoping to complete and inaugurate the new terminal building at Duqm airport in the second half of 2018. All the civil works related to the terminal building have been completed. Now the work on installing airport systems is going on and this will also likely to be finished in due time, may be by the end of this year,' Dr Mohammed bin Nasser al Zaabi, CEO of PACA said.
Dr Zaabi was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a press conference organised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday to unveil the ministry's future plans.
Air traffic to Duqm airport is expected to rise significantly in near future as a number of projects in Duqm area are likely to go on stream, including the US$7bn Duqm refinery project. Construction work on several mega projects in Duqm, including a liquid berth at Duqm port, a major crude storage facility and an integrated fish processing zone is also going on.
Dr Zaabi said the government has also initiated a study to scout for probable location for a new airport in Musandam along with the improvement at the existing airport, which is managed by the Ministry of Defence.
'In Musandam, we have started a study on the potential location for the new airport. We are hoping to finish the phase 1 of the study this year only. The phase 1 of the study includes suggestions about the new location only. Next year, we would be starting more detailed study about the airport,' he said.
He said the existing airport at Musandam, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, is used for managing all Oman Air flights. The proposed study will also look into the potential improvement in the existing airport in Musandam.
On Sohar airport, which is currently being operated on temporary basis, Dr Zaabi said the airport will be extended to meet the growth in air traffic. 'Now it will be floated for private investment to complete tracks and terminal building etc,' he added.
